Unfair on Chappell's part
Things are not looking too rosy for Indian cricket team. They are expected to win 2-0 against Zimbabwe, but that has been taken for granted even before India embarked on this tour.
Ganguly's indirect reference on Chappell that Gangs was suggested to drop himself from the final XI doesnt make things any easier on the already depressed dressing room. When I saw the scores on the first day (Zim were 263/7), I thought this is a test series between the bottom 2 teams in the icc table. ( A simple reference: NZ defeated Zimbabwe in under 5 days and that is both the tests included)
Agreed, Ganguly has been woefully out of touch for a long time and its been eons since he came with a winning score, I still feel India doesnt have a batsman to replace him. To ask him to step out on the eve of the test and that too against Zimbabwe (where he could attempt to gain some form and confidence) is atrocious. Thank god, it is always the captain's decision and not the coach's.
Now that this issue has flared up and will be blown out of proportions by the media soon, it doesnt augur too well for India in dressing-room ambience.
Hope, Ganguly comes back with a string of high scores and leave the cricket scene with a bang than a whimper.
